Seminar Hosted by Dr. Ned Hill,
premier authority on economic development
Earlier this year Blue Springs EDC co-hosted with the City of Blue
Springs' Community Development Department a seminar session conducted by
one of the nation's premier authorities on economic development, Dr. Ned
Hill, Vice President for Economic Development at Cleveland State
University.
Dr. Hill provided everyone with food for thought and the following
observations based on his years of study and analysis:
1. Don't be victims - take control of your economic development future
or someone else will.
2. Economic development is about products; not jobs - the more
attractive your product the more you will sell.
3. Economic development is practiced through the income statement of
the business - economic development customers are businesses, therefore
economic develpment practitioners should act and think like businesses.
4. Build economies from areas of strength, while intentionally
addressing areas of weakness - determine your assets and sell
agrressively but work on your flaws.
5. Avoid fads and silver bullet thinking; celebrate differences and
differentiators - every community is not right for the latest economic
development "rage". Stick to what your community does best!
